We Are One in Christ

Hymn #467 in Celebrating Grace Hymnal — “We Are One in Christ”

[pullquote_center width=”80%”]As the bread of life is broken, the cup of love outpoured,
We are one in Christ, our Savior, and sent to serve the Lord.
In the bread of life here given, we become what we receive.
In the cup of love here offered, affirm what we believe.[/pullquote_center]

Communion, and what happens here, are mysteries. Some have explained it as the actual eating and drinking of Christ’s body, leading early critics of Christianity to accuse believers of cannibalism. Other believers see in the cup and plate symbols of belonging. This 21st century hymn highlights yet another meaning for communion: in the elements, we become the body of Christ, and affirm our identity. Think of the responsibility of becoming the body of Christ.

Are you ready? Come. Eat. Drink. Become.
